Underinsured / Uninsured Motorists
The unexpected happens. You are involved in a motor vehicle crash and it is not your fault. Your car is damaged and needs extensive repairs, leaving you with no transportation. You may have injuries resulting in medical bills and lost wages while you recover. You know you have automobile insurance and you assume it will take care of everything.
Florida Law requires all motorists to have a minimum of $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability (PDL). If you have been injured in an accident, you will find your PIP is rapidly exhausted by medical bills and lost wages. Unfortunately, current research ranks Florida as being 2nd in the nation for uninsured motorists, with approximately 24% of the motorists being uninsured. There will be no insurance coverage on the other side.
WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST UNINSURED MOTORISTS
- Increase the limits of your PIP and PDl coverage;
- Obtain Uninsured Motorist Insurance (UM) to pay for you and your passengers' medical bills and lost wages;
- Obtain Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage (UMPD) to pay for damage to your vehicle; and
- Obtain Underinsured Motorist Protection (UIM).
Being involved in any type of vehicular crash usually results in damage to your vehicle that most likely will not be fully covered by insurance. It is very common to hear "it's totaled".
